Following an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Kuala Langat, Selangor, the Sarawak government has announced a ban on the import of live pigs, pork, and related products from Peninsular Malaysia.
Sarawak’s Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr. Stephen Rundi, issued a statement confirming the ban. He emphasized that the measure is necessary to prevent the virus from spreading to Sarawak, which could have a devastating impact on the local pig farming industry.
He stated that Sarawak only permits the import of pork and related products from ASF- and Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)-free zones, and all suppliers must obtain a valid import permit approved by the Sarawak Veterinary Authority.
Dr. Rundi also highlighted that Sarawak has never allowed the import of live pigs and pork from Peninsular Malaysia, as the region is not classified as an FMD-free zone.
Additionally, he reminded the public that under Section 8 of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999, importing pork or related products without a permit is illegal. Offenders can face a fine of up to RM50,000, and the products will be confiscated.
