Chinese New Year’s Eve Absent for the Next 5 Years

The Year of the Snake in the Chinese calendar begins on January 29, 2025. However, there will be no Chinese New Year’s Eve (年三十) for the next five years. Instead, the 29th day of the lunar month will directly transition into the first day of the Chinese New Year. The next 年三十 will only reappear in 2030, a phenomenon explained by the rules of the traditional Chinese calendar.

The last Chinese New Year’s Eve occurred on February 9, 2024, during the Year of the Dragon, marking the final 年三十 for several years. From 2025 to 2029, the eve of the Chinese New Year will fall on the 29th day of the lunar month. These dates are:
• 2025: January 28
• 2026: February 16
• 2027: February 5
• 2028: January 25
• 2029: February 12

The absence of 年三十 is due to the calculation of the Chinese calendar, which is based on the moon’s phases. Each lunar month is determined by the cycle of the moon’s waxing and waning, known in astronomy as the synodic month. This results in months that occasionally lack a 30th day.
